Societies and cultures have been known to engage in sports activities for as long as one could remember. They are therefore not anything new, may be just some small difference on the type of games we have now as compared to then. The purpose of sports and athletics in the days of our forefathers may slightly be different from its role now. The reasoning is rather obvious, there is a big difference in the society today and what it was then. Using the youth as an example, now they are more prone to engage themselves in drug abuse and other sort of criminal behavior. Now a lot of school going youths who had potential have dropped out of school or engage in criminal activities because of the drug problem. By actively participating in the sports and athletics one will be fully engaged with positive things and leave no room or little room to such negative influence.

Keeping ourselves healthy and fit is a goal we all want to accomplish. You may be playing soccer or basketball as a way of having fun with friends but unknowingly be exercising and keeping fit. You may be playing basketball to pass time or just to have fun, but also keeping fit at the same time. The modern lifestyle needs one to frequently exercise if they are to live a healthy life. A society that actively participates in sports and athletics is therefore a healthy one.

Another importance of sports and athletics is on the possibility of getting an income from them. There are many sportsmen and women and athletes who have done quite well for themselves without necessarily having that university degree. They therefore provide a society with a means of getting an income, rather than depending on a white collar job or an education alone.

The importance of sports and athletics in today’s society should never be overlooked. A number of societal problems could actually be addressed through them.
